The Soundtrack of our Faith:

Coritos and Pentecostal Memory

In the spiritual and social life of Pentecostal communities, especially among Latino congregations, coritos were more than just music. They were theology set to rhythm (maybe not always accurate but it got us through!), oral tradition in motion, and collective prayer made audible. Short, repetitive, and Spirit-filled, coritos invited even the untrained singer to participate in praise. They were often sung spontaneously, in moments of emotional release, healing, and fervent altar ministry. For many of the women featured in this project, these songs were the background to their preaching, praying, and power.

We highlight twos clip from Israel & New Breed’s recent project Coritos de Fuego, a historic preservation effort in itself that honors the rich spiritual legacy of these songs. His revival of coritos is more than nostalgic, it reminds us that preserving our sound is part of preserving our story.

These songs were passed down in storefront churches, sung in tongues, and carried through the diaspora. They were fire, resistance, and refuge. They are part of the legacy of the Hidden Figures we honor.
